Fort Worth is a city in the state of Texas. The city was established in 1849 as an army outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. It was one of 10 forts planned by Major General William J. Worth that were built along with other defenses to protect settlers from Native American attacks after he assumed command of the Department of Texas following the Mexican War.
Fort Worth quickly grew as a major stop along cattle drives from ranches in Texas to Missouri. It later became known as "Cowtown" due to its historic association with the cattle industry. In 1876, Fort Worth was chosen as the site of the Texas and Pacific Railway's mainline terminus, which resulted in massive growth and development of the city. The area around Downtown Fort Worth underwent significant redevelopment beginning in 2005 when several new mixed-use urban villages were built.
